Before you commit to a host, think of these things…
What kind of site are you running? If you plan on having an online store, be sure to get an SSL certificate. If you are selling or sharing large photos, videos or ebooks, consider storage and bandwidth, and make sure you have enough of both. Also think about what operating system the server is running. WordPress requires a Linux-based serve, which most host companies at least offer. In fact, most web applications require Linux, and the general consensus is that Linux servers are more stable and better suited to hosting websites.
Multiple MySQL databases and domains. It you think you may need to tie into several databases or run different applications that require databases, make sure you have enough to start with and not have to add addtional ones which will be an added expense. Same with domains.
How do you pay? Most hosting companies offer month to month, but at a higher price. Obviously you will get a better deal signing up for a 1, 2 or 3 year contract. But you may get stuck with bad service, or even worse, someone closing up. Do some research and ask around. Find the reputable hosts that have built a reputation with themselves and their customers. Don’t be tempted to always go with the bargain price.
Do they offer an easy one-click install of WordPress? Several hosts now offer a single click install of WordPress. This could be very important to you. If not, you will need to understand the basics of FTP file transfers and database setup. And if you do opt for the one-click installation, make sure that your host keeps the versions up-to-date. Old versions of WordPress should be upgraded.
Good customer support. Everyone spouts out “good customer support”. But when the rubber hits the road… Best thing to do is ask around. Search the web and see what people have to say. Cheap hosts can skimp on service. And from experience, they are always quick to blame the software.
Final thought. It’s always good to ask questions if you have them. When exploring the different options out there, and a question comes to mind, ask it. If they are reputable and service oriented, you should get an answer. And as I said before, it’s good to ask around
